The Roof Problems You Don’t Know About and the Damage They Cause

The Roof Problems You Don’t Know About

Every year, Delray Beach receives more than five feet of rain. In South Florida, we think we have the best weather. While we do enjoy the gorgeous Florida sunshine, you should understand that your roof will take a pounding year in and year out. The rain, the wind, and the elements all take their toll on your house.

At Aastro Roofing, we want you to feel secure about your roof. As part of our service to you, we would like you to understand that damage that your home could experience.

Shingle Damage

When the harsh winds of a summer squall or a winter storm blow, your shingles may flap in the wind. This is especially true if your shingles were poorly installed by another company. If you have gone more than fifteen years without repair or replacement, you are at risk for shingle damage. This is due to the fact that shingles become brittle and inflexible at about this time.

There are signs of shingle lift. When the shingles of your roof do not look like they are lying completely flat, that is a bad omen. You will want to break out the binoculars and look for shingles that are askew or altogether gone.

A storm can provide the perfect backdrop for the invasion of mold. Water does not need that much space to enter your home uninvited, and once it gets in there you have a problem. When water has soaked into an area, it can lead to mold.

After mold has come into your home, it needs to be eliminated quickly. If it is not, it is possible, and even likely, that it will spread. Spores travel quickly through ventilation systems. This means that it can go into parts of your house where you are regularly. Some mold causes health problems.

Shingle Granules

When you are cleaning your roof, it is a good idea to check your gutters and drainage systems. Your shingles will naturally shed some granules. The issue can become problematic very quickly, however. After it rains, it is prudent to check the downspouts. When you see many granules, you have a situation.

At this point, it is wise to check your roof. You will want to look for shingles that are very thin, or have become exposed. This is bad due to the fact that granules protect you from the Sun’s ultraviolet light. If you notice that many shingles have become smooth, it may be a good idea to replace your roof.

Sagging Ceiling

Of these, this is easily the worst in terms of cost. A ceiling that is sagging or discolored means that there is water leaking down from the roof. The water will pool, and you run the risk of having severe structural damage.

When you spot a sagging ceiling, it is a good idea to check for the source. If you catch the problem early, chances are your costs will be insignificant. As soon as you see it, you will need to go up to your attic and find where the water is coming from.
