There has been some controversy over whether or not roof ventilation is really necessary. We’re here to tell you that with over 30 years of experience, the answer is yes! Let’s dive into how a well-ventilated roof protects your home from unwanted complications and expenses.
Why Was Venting Invented?
This all depends on what climate you live in. Here in Florida, it’s summer all year long. It doesn’t snow or gets brutally cold so we don’t have to worry about ice dams. In Florida’s hot and steamy climate, the primary reason for ventilation is to rid the attic or roof of hot air to reduce the home’s cooling load and relieve strain on air conditioning units.
Depending on what type of roof you have, there are two primary techniques for ventilation. Ventilation is only successful when there is air flow. This is done either mechanically or naturally. Mechanic ventilation requires an energy source. Natural ventilation occurs when hot air rises, and the pressure gets higher in the attic. Hot air that is escaping the attic is called exhaust. This hot air has no means of escape unless there is intake, cool air with a lower pressure that enters. This all happens naturally through exhaust and intake vents when the wind blows against the roof.
Long Live The Roof
If you want your roof to have a long life, you need ventilation. During the blazing summer months, your roof is soaking up all of the sun’s rays. This extends into your attic, which can cause shingles to become loose or damaged. If your roof and attic are kept cool, the pressure is kept lower, prolonging your roof’s life.
A well-ventilated roof will result in spending less money on your energy bill every month. A hot roof translates to a hot attic, which leads to a hot house. This kicks your air conditioning unit into overdrive, working harder than it should have to. If your roof is kept cool, you won’t need to crank up the AC as much. Hence, a less expensive energy bill.
A roof with poor or no ventilation is filled with hot, moist air. Any kind of water or moisture in your attic or roof is unwanted. Heat and condensation ruin your roof and it’s materials causing unexpected repairs and costs. Along with that, moisture results in fungus and mold to thrive on your roof. These kinds of issues can lead to much larger issues like complete roof replacement. This is where all of those unwanted and unnecessary repair and maintenance bills can be avoided with properly installed ventilation.
