A Shingle Roof Is a System—Not a Bundle of Shingles
The visible shingle is only one layer. Deck condition, secondary water resistance, underlayment, starter, flashing, valleys, ventilation, fasteners, hip and ridge, product approval, and installation details determine how the roof functions as a complete assembly.
The shingle sheds water. The assembly manages the roof.
Asphalt shingles are steep-slope roof coverings installed over a solidly sheathed deck. Florida’s current code requires asphalt shingles on slopes of at least 2:12 and requires installation to follow both code and manufacturer instructions.

Ten coordinated layers—not one visible product
The written proposal should identify the assembly and explain what happens if conditions change after tear-off.
Deck
Solid sheathing, condition, thickness, attachment and concealed damage.
Deck Water Control
Seam tape or other secondary-water-resistance pathway where specified.
Underlayment
Synthetic, self-adhered or another approved method matched to the assembly.
Edge Metal
Drip edge, eaves, rakes and compatible perimeter details.
Starter
Purpose-made starter at vulnerable roof edges with required sealant geometry.
Field Shingles
Exact product line, color, exposure, fastening and sealant.
Flashings & Valleys
Walls, valleys, chimneys, skylights, penetrations and transitions.
Hip & Ridge
Compatible accessory shingles and ridge details.
Ventilation
Intake, exhaust, attic configuration, moisture and duct conditions.
Roof File
Permits, approvals, photos, warranties, wood documentation and closeout.
South Florida performance starts below the shingle surface
Wind resistance is not a single number printed on a bundle. The roof must combine an approved shingle, correct fasteners, the specified fastening pattern, deck attachment, underlayment, perimeter details and roof geometry.
Fastener type and penetration
Florida code establishes minimum roofing-nail characteristics and penetration requirements. The selected product and approved assembly may add more specific requirements.
Nailing zone and depth
Overdriven, underdriven or misplaced fasteners can reduce performance. A wide nail line does not excuse incorrect placement or compressor pressure.
Number of fasteners
Do not publish “four nails” or “six nails” as a universal rule. The manufacturer instructions, wind conditions and approved assembly control.
Edges and starter
Eaves and rakes are vulnerable to wind uplift and wind-driven rain. Starter design, drip edge and edge fastening are system components.
Secondary water resistance
Deck-joint treatment or an approved full-deck self-adhered approach may materially change water-control and mitigation documentation.
Warranty wind numbers
A manufacturer wind-warranty value is not the home’s design wind speed. Product warranty conditions and building-code design are different systems of rules.

The underlayment strategy should be named—not hidden under “30-pound felt.”
CertainTeed leads—but the exact line must match the homeowner’s objective
Aastro’s current CertainTeed profile lists ShingleMaster™ PRO since 2016. That credential supports a CertainTeed-first educational approach, while the final product still depends on availability, Florida approval, aesthetics, performance objective, warranty path and the complete roof assembly.

Landmark Family
Dimensional architectural shingles for homeowners prioritizing familiar appearance and system value. Landmark and Landmark PRO are current CertainTeed product families.

Grand Manor
Premium designer shingle direction with a slate-inspired visual profile. Product availability and project-specific requirements should be verified.

Carriage House
Designer shingle direction for distinctive architectural appearance. It should be compared as a complete system, not only by square price.

Presidential Shake

Wind, impact, algae, reflectivity and appearance solve different problems
Do not let one marketing feature stand in for the complete roof decision.
Impact rating
UL impact classifications can support a product comparison and sometimes an insurer review, but they do not make a roof hail-proof or guarantee a premium discount.
Reflective shingles
Reflective granules can reduce solar absorption at the roof surface. They are not insulation and do not guarantee a specific indoor-temperature or utility-bill reduction.
Algae resistance
Algae-resistance features address staining and appearance. They do not replace ventilation, drainage, flashing or moisture control.
Designer construction
Premium laminated profiles can materially change appearance, weight, accessory requirements, installation time and price. Exact product details matter.

A new shingle roof should not trap an old attic problem
Intake and exhaust need to work as a system. Roof replacement is also the right time to identify disconnected bath or dryer ducts, blocked soffits, powered exhaust conflicts, air leakage, damaged insulation, conditioned-attic details and unusual moisture.
Repairability depends on more than the size of the visible defect
Shingles may still be repairable when a problem is isolated and compatible materials remain workable. Age, brittleness, color matching, repeated leaks, broad granule loss, flashings, underlayment condition and deck damage can make a replacement evaluation more responsible.
Localized repair may fit
- One defined defect or detail
- Surrounding shingles remain flexible enough to work
- Compatible material and flashing repair are practical
- No evidence of broad system failure
Broader evaluation may fit
- Recurring leaks or multiple repaired areas
- Brittle shingles or difficult matching
- Unknown deck or underlayment condition
- Storm damage or insurer age concerns
Replacement planning may fit
- Widespread deterioration
- Repeated repair is no longer economical
- Deck-level upgrades are a major objective
- The owner wants a new approved system and roof file
Normalize the proposal before you compare the price
If two contractors name the same manufacturer, compare the actual system line by line.

Seven questions produce a controlled next-step recommendation. The tool does not select a final product, approve structure, promise insurance savings or replace a field inspection.
Inspection, instant estimate or repair—depending on the situation
Replacement planning can begin with an instant estimate. Uncertain conditions should begin with an inspection. Known repair needs can move into the repair pathway.

Direct answers about asphalt shingle systems
Is an asphalt shingle roof only the shingle itself?
No. A complete roof includes the deck, deck-water-control strategy, underlayment, edge metal, starter, field shingles, flashings, valleys, hip and ridge, ventilation, penetrations, attachment, permits and closeout documentation.
Can asphalt shingles be installed on any roof slope?
No. The current Florida Building Code limits asphalt shingles to roof slopes of 2:12 or greater, and manufacturer instructions and product approvals can add project-specific requirements.
Does a higher wind warranty mean the roof is designed for that wind speed?
No. A manufacturer wind warranty is a contractual product-warranty provision. Building wind design depends on location, risk category, roof geometry, exposure, deck, attachment, product approval and the complete assembly.
Are impact-resistant shingles hail-proof?
No. Impact classifications are laboratory ratings. They can inform product selection and may be relevant to an insurer, but real storm damage is not eliminated and insurance discounts are not guaranteed.
Is full self-adhered underlayment always the best choice?
No. Full self-adhered membrane can be appropriate, but the deck, roof slope, ventilation configuration, manufacturer system, moisture strategy, jurisdiction and approved assembly should be evaluated before specifying it.
Why does ventilation matter if the roof covering is new?
Because a new covering does not correct blocked soffits, poor exhaust, disconnected ducts, air leakage, wet insulation, condensation or an incorrect conditioned-attic configuration. Intake and exhaust need to be evaluated as one system.
How should I compare two proposals using the same brand?
Compare the exact shingle line, underlayment, secondary water resistance, starter, hip and ridge, flashing, valleys, fasteners, ventilation, deck/wood pricing, permits, warranties and concealed-condition procedures. The manufacturer name alone does not make the proposals equal.
Choose the action that fits what you already know.
If the roof is straightforward and replacement is the goal, start with the instant estimate. If the condition, deck, ventilation, conversion or repairability is uncertain, book an inspection. Active intrusion should start with a phone call.
