Is concrete roof tile itself the waterproofing layer?
No. Concrete tile sheds most rainfall and protects the assembly, but wind-driven rain can reach beneath the tile. The underlayment, flashings, drainage path, roof deck and complete approved assembly provide the water-control system.
What is the difference between concrete and clay tile?
Concrete and clay differ in material, weight, profile availability, color behavior, accessories, installation details and product approvals. The correct choice depends on the home, architecture, structure, wind design and homeowner priorities.
Does Aastro always recommend screws instead of nails or foam?
Aastro generally prefers a controlled screw-attached concrete-tile assembly when the tested system, deck, tile and design pressures support it. That is an Aastro field preference—not a universal code rule. Approved nail, screw, clip and foam-adhesive systems can all be appropriate.
Can foam-attached concrete tile perform in high wind?
Yes, when the specific tile, adhesive, substrate, placement pattern, contact area, cure conditions and product approval are followed. Foam attachment is installation-sensitive, so field quality control is especially important.
What underlayment is best beneath concrete tile?
There is no universal best underlayment. Approved self-adhered membranes, mechanically attached base-and-cap systems, deck-joint tape plus approved underlayment and other tested assemblies may be appropriate depending on slope, deck, jurisdiction, wind design and warranty goals.
Do battens make a tile roof better?
Not automatically. Battens can provide positive anchoring, drainage space and in some assemblies ventilation, while direct-to-deck systems can simplify the assembly. The approved tile system and project conditions control.
Can a shingle or metal roof be converted to concrete tile?
Sometimes, but the heavier roof assembly triggers structural-capacity verification. Truss spacing alone does not establish capacity; design loads, span, lumber and plates, bearing, modifications, damage and other roof loads must be considered.
Does a new concrete tile roof automatically reduce insurance costs?
No. A permitted replacement and documented mitigation features may support underwriting review, but the carrier, policy, inspection results and other property characteristics control eligibility and pricing.
Can concrete tile be repaired instead of replaced?
Often, when damage is localized and the surrounding tile, underlayment, flashings, attachment and deck remain serviceable. Repeated leaks, widespread underlayment failure, broad breakage or concealed deterioration can change the recommendation.
What should a concrete tile proposal define?
The proposal should identify the tile manufacturer and profile, color, underlayment, secondary-water-resistance approach, attachment method, fasteners or adhesive, flashings, valleys, hips and ridges, deck procedure, concealed-condition process, permit path, warranty terms and exclusions.
