Spanish, Mission, interlocking and custom clay profiles can create distinctive South Florida architecture, but the visible tile is only one layer. The roof still depends on the deck, water-control assembly, flashings, attachment, wind design, structural capacity, accessories and repairability.
Clay tile can be durable and architecturally expressive, but it is not the waterproofing layer by itself. Wind-driven rain, broken pieces, laps, walls, penetrations and valleys make the underlayment and flashing system critical.

Clay is not one generic barrel tile. One-piece Spanish/S, two-piece Mission, interlocking/flatter profiles and custom historic pieces behave differently.

Clay roofs can remain visually attractive while an aging underlayment, failed valley, wall transition or penetration allows water into the assembly. Replacement planning should define the water-control path before the visible tile is ordered.

No. Clay tile is a water-shedding roof covering. Wind-driven rain and water at valleys, walls, penetrations, broken tile and laps can reach beneath it. The underlayment, flashings, drainage path, roof deck and complete approved assembly provide the water-control system.
Clay and concrete differ in material, weight, profile geometry, color behavior, accessory pieces, replacement matching, regional availability, installation details and product approvals. Neither is automatically better for every home.
One-piece S or Spanish tile combines the pan-and-cover shape into one interlocking piece. Two-piece Mission uses separate pans and covers, creating a more traditional barrel appearance and different layout, attachment, accessory and repair questions.
Aastro generally prefers a controlled screw-attached tile assembly when the specific clay product, deck, tested assembly and design pressures support it. That is an Aastro field preference, not a universal code rule. Approved nail, screw, clip and adhesive systems can all be legitimate.
Approved adhesive systems can perform when the exact tile, substrate, adhesive, placement pattern, contact area, cure conditions and product approval are followed. The system is installation-sensitive and should be verified against current written requirements.
Clay profiles, colors, glazes, kiln variation and discontinued products can make exact matching difficult. A repair may require salvage stock, a compatible current product, custom clay or a broader repair strategy depending on the roof and architectural requirements.
